Meet the Neighbors: Lancaster and Allentown

We have good neighbors in Reading. The cities of Allentown and Lancaster, to the northeast and southwest, respectively, are rich in history yet vibrant and modern. Here is our take on a few standout events coming up in our neighboring cities.

Lancaster at a Glance

Did You Know…that Lancaster is the oldest inland city in the United States? It was founded in 1718 along the Susquehanna River.

Don’t Miss…Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum, the country’s largest Pennsylvania Dutch living history farm and village. It features more than 40 historic buildings on 100 beautiful acres.

Upcoming Fun Events…Celebrate Lancaster, on Friday, June 28, when downtown comes alive with music, food, and entertainment, ending with an amazing fireworks display. The Long’s Park Art & Craft Festival is one of the country’s top fine arts and crafts festival, held over Labor Day Weekend.

But they party all year long in Lancaster! Other notable events include the Launch Music Conference and Festival in the spring; First Fridays (first Friday of every month) to support the arts; and Music Fridays (third Friday of every month) for live music through the city.

Quick Look at Allentown

Did You Know…that the Liberty Bell was hidden from the British in Allentown? Then known as the Pennsylvania State House bell, it was hidden in the basement of the Old Zion Reformed Church. Ten other bells were also hidden under the floorboards during the Revolutionary War to prevent the British from melting them for cannon.

Must See…A game at Coca-Cola Park. Everybody raves about the baseball field, home of the IronPigs, a farm team of the Philadelphia Phillies. Built in 2008, it’s a progressive, state-of-the-art facility that stresses fan interactivity. The PorkCenter—a quad-screen station for social media tracking and game watching—was the first functioning social media center in professional baseball. It has been the most visited venue in Minor League Baseball for the past three years running.

Upcoming Fun Event…The Sixth Annual Blues Brews & Barbecue Festival, Saturday, June 8, on Hamilton Street. Come hungry! After sampling tri-tip steak sandwiches, barbeque, and brisket, save room for a pulled pork cupcake. Eight different bands play from noon to 10 pm.
