Reading Gynecomastia Treatment

Restore a sharp, masculine chest contour with male breast reduction

If you are a man who has unusually large breasts (a condition called gynecomastia), you may be a candidate for a male breast reduction, a very common procedure here in Berks County and across the country. If you have excess fat or sagging skin on your chest area after losing a great deal of weight, you may also benefit from a male breast reduction. This procedure is intended to give you a flatter chest with a more masculine contour.

“A skillful surgeon that understood what I was looking for and completed both abdominal lipo and gynecomastia surgery with fantastic results. At 48 years old, I feel and look better than I even anticipated. Highly recommend Dr Reedy.”*

During a male breast reduction, our board certified plastic surgeons remove excess breast tissue and skin, making your chest look more masculine, which can significantly increase your self-confidence and sense of freedom in sports and other social activities.

You may be a good candidate for male breast reduction if you have any of the following conditions:

  • Breasts that are enlarged or unusually developed for a male
  • Skin irritation beneath the breasts
  • Enlarged or puffy nipples
  • Excess skin or tissue left on the breast area after weight loss
  • Feelings of self-consciousness about the large size of your breasts

Before you decide to go ahead, and before your surgeon can agree that you should, however, you need to understand (1) what will be done, (2) what you can expect during post-surgery recovery, and (3) the risks that come with this or any similar elective surgery.

Dr. Reedy or Dr. Lindsay will meet with you and go over the details of the procedure and help you decide if male breast reduction is right for you during your initial, complimentary consultation at our Berks County office, at Berks Plastic Surgery.

The Procedure

Gynecomastia treatment employs a vertical incision technique to reduce scars. It is done on an outpatient basis under anesthesia. Excess breast tissue or fat can be removed with liposuction, excision, or a combination of the two. Excess skin can also be removed at this time. It is important to note that our plastic surgeons work with a qualified anesthesia provider.

Recovery

Male breast reduction surgery often requires that you wear a special vest or similar compression garments directly after surgery, to help support your new, flatter chest contour. The vest lessens stress on your sutures and promotes faster healing with lower health risks.

Risks and Complications

There are risks and possible complications associated with any surgery. The specific risks and the suitability of male breast reduction surgery for a given individual can be determined only at the time of consultation. Minor complications that do not affect the outcome occur occasionally. Major complications are rare.

Our surgeons take great care to evaluate each patient individually. They will advise you of your own unique risk profile and enable you to compare it with that of male breast reduction candidates in general, before determining whether you’re a good candidate for the procedure.

Dr. Reedy and Dr. Lindsay specialize in plastic surgery procedures for men and women, and they can help you reach your goals. To schedule an appointment or to learn more about male breast surgery, please contact us today.
