Eyelid Surgery for Men in Reading

Look sharp, feel sharp

We communicate in large part with our eyes. No matter your age, when your eyes look alert, you appear energized, well-rested, and in control. However, if you have lower eyelid puffiness, dark circles, or drooping skin on your upper eyelids, friends, colleagues, and clients might mistake your disposition for being tired, angry, or disinterested. For some men, an excess of skin or sagging tissues around the eyelids can even impair vision.

Eyelid surgery, also called blepharoplasty, can prove an effective solution for men in Reading, PA who would like to achieve a more alert and rested appearance. You may be a good candidate for eyelid surgery if you have any of the following conditions:

Upper Eyelid Lift

  • Excess skin that hides the natural fold of the upper eyelids
  • Loose skin that hangs down from the upper eyelids
  • Puffiness in the upper eyelids that creates a tired look
  • Drooping eyelid tissues that interfere with vision

Lower Eyelid

  • Excess skin and fine wrinkles of the lower eyelids
  • Heavy-looking “bags” and, in some cases, dark circles

Male patients have several options for blepharoplasty. Upper eyelid surgery can remove the excess fat and drooping skin of the upper eyelids, improving range of vision and giving the eyes a more open appearance.  Lower eyelid surgery can minimize bags under the eyes and tighten the lower eyelid skin. Upper and lower eyelid techniques can also be combined for overall improvement of the eyelids.

Eyelid surgery in men generally yields a substantial and lasting improvement. Our board certified plastic surgeons are skilled in achieving results that, once healed, are difficult to detect as surgery and look natural to a man’s face.

The Procedure

Eyelid surgery is an outpatient procedure, performed under anesthesia. For the upper eyelid, your surgeon will make incisions that follow the natural lines of your eyelids and extend slightly beyond the outside corner into the laugh lines or other existing creases. In most patients, an incision is hidden within the natural fold of the upper eyelid. Excess skin and fatty tissue are removed through this incision. The incision follows the natural contour of the upper eyelid, so it will be well-concealed once it heals.

For lower eyelid surgery, an incision is typically hidden just below the lower eyelashes, well camouflaged by natural creases. Eyelid surgeries generally take about one to three hours to complete. Dr. Reedy and Dr. Lindsay work exclusively with a board-certified MD anesthesiologist.

Straining, bending and lifting should be avoided for a brief period after your operation. You can resume normal activities, including a return to work, within ten days or less, depending on the nature of your job. After surgery, your eyes are lubricated with ointment to reduce dryness in this area. Cold compresses reduce swelling and bruising. Sutures are removed two to seven days after surgery. Most patients can resume wearing contact lenses the day after surgery.

Risks and Complications

There are risks and possible complications associated with any surgery. Complications in blepharoplasty don’t occur often, but may include infection, adverse reaction to anesthesia, and asymmetrical healing or scarring. Scars may remain slightly darker for six months or longer after surgery, but they eventually fade to a thin, virtually invisible white line.
