What Is and Isn’t Normal After Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation is an ever-popular procedure with sky-high patient satisfaction rates. Most breast augmentation patients are absolutely delighted with their results and have zero regrets—even so, during the recovery period, many patients wonder if things will really turn out as they hope.
After having breast augmentation, it can be difficult to know what is a normal part of the healing process and what might indicate a potential problem. To help you out, we’ve outlined a few of the most common things that patients experience after breast augmentation. Just one caveat before you read on: talk to your doctor if you see or feel anything that concerns you—there’s no substitute for an in-person look at any concerns.
My chest feels really tight, and my boobs feel like they might explode
It takes time for muscle, breast tissue, and skin to adjust to your implants; until these tissues have healed sufficiently, you can expect to feel (possibly intense) tightness in the chest area, particularly if your implants are placed beneath the muscle. Normal postoperative swelling, which peaks about 3 to 5 days after surgery, will amplify feelings of chest pressure. Some women also report that their breasts feel engorged (tender, heavy and inflamed).
How long this lasts: Typically, the more intense discomfort from tightness dissipates over the first one to two weeks after surgery; however, you may experience mild feelings of stiffness and tightness in the chest muscles for a month or longer. The bulk of swelling should subside within about three weeks, although you can expect modest swelling to last about 3 months.
By the 3-month mark, your breasts will be pretty close to their final shape and appearance, although scars will continue to fade for several more months.
When to call your plastic surgeon: If swelling seems severe, especially one one side, or if feelings of engorgement are accompanied by fever and breasts are very warm to the touch, contact your doctor immediately; these are signs of bleeding and infection, respectively.
My boobs look like torpedos and my nipples are uneven
There is a reason that experienced surgeons prefer to include only breast augmentation “after” photos taken at least 3 months post-op in their patient galleries—it takes time for the breasts to “drop and fluff” or settle into their final position and for scars to fade. Initially, your new breasts will probably appear unnaturally high on the chest and may have a stark “torpedo” shape. During the first few weeks of recovery, one breast may seem bigger than the other, and one may appear to drop lower than the other. You may even wonder if your plastic surgeon made a mistake—chances are the answer is no, and your breasts just need more time to heal. These are all normal occurrences after breast augmentation.
How long this lasts: Again, your body needs time to adjust to your implants; post-op swelling can also contribute to asymmetry, as swelling might go down earlier in one breast than the other. Typically, the 3-month mark is when your breasts will be pretty close to their final shape and appearance, although scars will continue to fade for several more months.
When to call your plastic surgeon: If, after 3 months, one or both breasts still appear misshapen, you are experiencing significant asymmetry, or one breast seems unnaturally hard to the touch, consult with your plastic surgeon—these symptoms indicate a possible capsular contracture. If you are still dissatisfied with your breast augmentation results 6 to 12 months after your procedure, you may need to look into breast augmentation revision.
I’m feeling depressed about this whole thing
Ask a breast augmentation patient if she’s glad she did it, and you’ll most likely hear, “YES! But there were a few days in the beginning….” With so much emphasis on the physical aspects of breast augmentation, it’s easy to forget that recovery has an emotional side, too. It’s actually common for patients to go through a brief period of mild depression after any surgery, breast augmentation included.
Post-op “blues” pass after a few weeks, usually after you’ve returned to your normal routine and you’re noticing that your breasts look better every day.
Why? There are a number of possible causes, from anesthesia to pain medications to the disruption that surgery and recovery inevitably make in a patient’s routine. Add to this a 1 to 3 month period where your breasts may look and feel awkward before settling into a more natural position, and temporary feelings of doubt are understandable.
How long this lasts: The important thing here is to be patient; post-op blues almost always pass after a few weeks, when you’ve returned to your normal routine, post-op swelling and stiffness has subsided, and you’re noticing that your breasts look better every day.
When to see your plastic surgeon: If you are experiencing feelings of severe depression at any time, see a qualified professional. If you still feel unhappy about your breast augmentation many months after surgery, it’s time to visit your plastic surgeon. You may just need more time to heal, but there is a chance you’ll want to consider a revision procedure.
I’m having shooting pains in my nipples
As nerve endings heal after surgery, it’s totally normal to feel sharp but short-lived pangs in your breasts, particularly in the nipples. Other strange yet normal sensations and pains during the first few weeks may include chest muscle spasms and upper back pain (usually stemming from a change from your normal sleeping position or hunching your shoulders over to protect your sore chest).
How long this lasts: Intermittent chest muscle spasms after breast augmentation may last up to three or four weeks, until the pectoral muscle has fully adjusted to having an implant beneath it. Shooting nipple pains can last up to 6 months or longer, although you will notice these becoming less frequent and less intense as time goes on.
When to see your plastic surgeon: While mild discomfort is to be expected for the first two or three weeks, severe or persistent pain or discomfort that disrupts your ability to sleep or perform normal allowed activities needs attention: call your doctor.
I’m bloated, constipated and tired
Having surgery is a shock to the system, including the digestive system. Anesthesia and medication can cause nausea and vomiting in some patients, and you may lose your appetite for a few days. Pain medication, as well as a reduction in activity level, can lead to constipation. Bloating and fatigue are also normal after-effects.
How long this lasts: Typically, nausea lasts just a few days and constipation a week or so at most. You can alleviate digestive distress by staying hydrated, taking pain meds only as long as you need them to keep discomfort at a tolerable level, and taking medications with a meal. Also, while exercise is restricted, taking frequent, easy walks will aid in digestion and circulation and help lift your mood.
When to call your plastic surgeon: If symptoms are severe or persist longer than a few days, see your surgeon. The solution may be as simple as adjusting your diet, or your surgeon may recommend a medication to alleviate your discomfort. Do NOT take any diuretics or laxatives without your plastic surgeon’s approval.
Stay in touch with your plastic surgeon
Everyone heals differently, and you may experience all or none of these effects during recovery. If you’re concerned about anything, even if you think what you’re experiencing is probably normal, it’s best to check in with your plastic surgeon.
In the rare event that you’re unhappy with your breasts after augmentation, don’t live with a look you don’t love. Breast revision surgery with a skilled plastic surgeon can offer improvements.
A qualified plastic surgeon will have you return periodically throughout your recovery to assess your progress and answer questions that arise. Typically, you’ll visit several times in the first two weeks after surgery, and appointments are spaced further apart after your initial recovery period has passed.
In the rare event that you are unhappy with the way your breasts look after augmentation, don’t live with a look you don’t love. Book a consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon who is experienced in breast revision surgery. Not all issues require a revision, but many do. A skilled plastic surgeon can make improvements, often using the same incision sites made during your initial procedure.

I had my augmentation 2 1/2 weeks ago and gave very large and painful swollen lymph nodes in my right armpit and down my side. I’ve been taking ibuprofen and Tylenol nonstop to help and doing warm wet compress but it’s not helping. I called my doctor to see if I need an antibiotic but they said no. How long can I have these and so you suggest anything else. This is also the side that is not coming down very well like the other side.
I’ve had to have a double mastectomy 2 years ago and then had to have it fix the very next year.
Now it has been a year sense the second surgery and I still have lots of pain and what I can only call a torn muscle under my left arm.
I would really like to know if this is normal.
If it is not then I don’t know who to turn to for help I have talk to my surgeon and get nothing in return!

One question I have though. After surgery my areolas became swollen and ‘puffy’. I’m just wondering how long this will last before they go back to normal, if they will?

Hello, i would like to ask, regarding the tornado- look of the chests that they are too high on the chest in the beginning, I’ve found out that many surgeons give to the patient for the first month to wear a ´belt’ high in the chest in order to puss down the implants. I asked my surgeon who didn’t agree with this.
Do I have to worry?what is your opinion?

I am 2 days post breast lifting and augmentaion and I feel strange feeling in the lift breast like motor or electrical current is going in for few seconds then disappear without pain and it happen very frequent looks like there is some thing inside with electrical current

Can’t believe my surgeon wasso vagye in what you have shared. My breasts are unchanged from the day after surgery. One is very firm, and the other looks like there is no implant there at all. As a cancer survivor, I dont want to keep being cut on. I hope he can and is willing to fix this. Its very obvious and has really damaged my body image.

I just had my breast augmentation done yesterday, it’s been a rough tow day so far with all the pain and pressure. I personally find it a bit difficult to move around, or to sleeping in a recliner chair as advised, just so uncomfortable. I have spoke to a few of my friends who previously did the surgery, and the mentioned the same. They did however said by the third day it should start to get better. It’s day two, I am keeping up with my pain meds, antibiotics, and a muscle relaxer that has been helping quite a bit. All I can say is do not get discouraged, do some research on what to expect. I am very optimistic about the healing process. Hope this helps a bit.

So I had my surgery this past Tuesday, May 15th, I had tubes placed in my to drain the blood. Went to my follow up and they did not remove them yet. Today is Sunday, woke up from a nap and have blood coming out from the tube site. I have an appointment tomorrow, so will see what the doctor says tomorrow. I’m just wondering why a lot of females didn’t have this drain tubes in them. What’s going on. Why isn’t my doctor telling me what’s going on.

I had my breast augmentation 3 days ago. I was really sick after Anesthesia.bad nausea and vomiting and hot extremely constipated as I wasn’t able to take in fluids or eat much. I’ve been sleeping on my back and find it easy as the pain meds knock me out. Day 3 seems better, I can definitely move more and the pain on my chest when moving is so much better! I wished I’d read this before surgery. But glad it could confirm a few things for me. Just can’t wait for the end product. Still a way to go!

It’s been exactly two weeks since my surgery and my right breast is still a lot more swollen then my left one. The left one seems to be falling in place and I don’t see much different on the right . Is this normal?
I had breast augmentation 6 days ago, besides the normal discomfort I am feeling, I am also getting shooting pain under my right breast where I have have the incision, the pain only occurs when I move not when I am laying still, is this nornal.
I am on day 7 of post op and have been having searing burning pain under my right breast. It doesn’t seem to be the incision as my surgeon has looked at it and it’s not infected but I did have to have my fold lowered to accommodate my implants. There is tightness on both sides underneath my breasts with a pulling sensation. That I can deal with it’s the burning searing pain on the right that makes arm movements on that side unbearable. My surgeon says it’s nerve pain that will just take time to heal. I am only taking ibuprofen 600 Mg every 4-6 hours but it really doesn’t do much for the pain. I’ve tried oxycodone with acetaminophen as well but that just makes me feel drugged without relief. What else can I do to help alleviate the pain? I can’t go back to work like this and I am a licensed esthetician who works with my arms on clients all day.

I am getting close to my 4 week recovery of having breast augmentation done and have experienced that one boob is hard is a normal symptom of recovery?
I’m 8 days post OP. Is it normal to have almost a burning sensation when I run my finger across the top of my breast, it’s only on the right. Is this just the nerves healing?
I just had my saline filled implants replaced with silicone implants due to one of the saline implants rupturing and deflating. Right after removel/replacement surgery I bled out into the capsule around the implant on the side that had previously ruptured. Had to go back into surgery for a second time in the same week to have hematoma removed. That was a little over a week ago and I’ve exspierianced a lot of pain, swelling, bruising and firmness on that side while the other side never swelled, no soreness or bruising and very soft to the toutch. This information was very helpful, especialy since it mentioned that it’s normal for one breast to be mishapen during the healing process. Also I have had sharp shooting pains in my breasts and nipples and relieved to read that that is normal. I’m looking forward to healing and confinite that I will be happy with my final result. My surgeon tells me that due to the original rupture, removel and replacement and then the hematoma removel, it could take up to 6 to 12 months for that breast to shape up, soften and completely heal due to so much trauma to that breast 🙁 I’m trying to be patient. Is anyone exsperiancing anything similar to my situation?

i had breast augmentation 8 months ago the shape is good and the touch is soft but during the recent 2 weeks i feel pain in my breasts specially both outer sides of them
I am almost at the second week and everyday has gotten better but I am still experiencing something new here and there. I have one breast that is slightly bigger than the other which I have ready is normal considering one may settle before the other. My surgeon stated during my one week checkup that I was healing wonderfully and removed my stitches. However, this week I am experiences a few shooting scarp pains in that same left breast. I am having no fevers, I sleep well, it doesn’t hurt to move, no bruising so I am staying optimistic that everything is going to be just fine. I await my 1 month appointment and see what everything looks like.
Make sure to relay all of your concerns to your surgeon. The healing process can be challenging, and everyone experiences it differently. The first month in particular can be a rollercoaster. Good luck with your follow-up!
Implant side is hot and red. Other side, which was reduced is not hot or red. I am concerned about possible infection.

Did any of you have a warm burning sensations while healing? I’m 2 weeks post op and My breasts are warm to the touch and feel like they’re burning inside, but no fever or suspicious discharge. This just started a couple of days ago. Just wondering if anyone else felt this way?!

I had a breast augmentation 6 months ago. I was a 34B and had 360cc natrelle inspire implants under he muscle. I feel like it’s been nothing but a headache. I still experience pain mainly in my right breast which is much lower and I can feel rippling along the bottom (I thought with gel that wouldn’t happen) and my left breast is much higher. Neither are hard so I don’t honk capsular contraction? I feel like my surgeon always tells me it’s fine and it will go away but it still hasn’t and I can’t afford to get another surgery on it. Any thoughts.

I had my surgery yesterday. If I would have known it would be this difficult I wouldn’t have had it. I can’t take pain pills because they make me so sick. It’s good to read that others have felt the same thing. I don’t feel so lonely and scared. I feel like I have two watermelons that are made of cement. Oh the pain!
It gets better! I use Exparel in my patients to minimize the pain. Many don’t need opioids at all.

I had a breast augmentation done in May. It has been three and a half months. I followed up with my plastic surgeon at the 3-month mark, and he said everything looks good. But I am still having a burning/pain sensation on the lateral side of my left breast. Is there a test that can be done to make sure that it is healing correctly? From a visual standpoint they look normal. But it is painful to sleep on my left side, and it aches even without movement.

Hello, I had my breast augmentation surgery a week ago today. I threw up as soon as they woke me up from surgery, and all of that day. Then I ended up getting a hematoma and had to go back the very next morning and go back under for them to fix it. I have been so sick this entire week, constantly throwing up, even when there is nothing left to throw up. I have chills and then my body feels so hot. I don’t have a fever, but I’ve bever felt so miserable. My pain level is low, and I stopped taking all medications 3 days ago to try and stop the vomit. I am honestly so scared and don’t know what to do. My doctor said he’s never experienced this before and doesn’t have a lot of direction on what I should do. Does anyone have any advice for me?
Hi Taylor, thank you for reaching out. Post-operative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is a relatively common side effect of anesthesia. While many experience it within the first day of surgery, it can occur for a few days after your procedure. This may be the case, particularly since you had to have an immediate corrective surgery with anesthesia following your original procedure. Have you ever reacted to anesthesia in the past? That being said, I cannot diagnose anything over the internet and do recommend you reach out to your primary care physician. Sustained vomiting is worrisome, as it can lead to dehydration, irritation in the throat and esophagus, etc., not to mention the strain the movement may be putting on your healing incisions. I wish you the best of luck and, again, encourage you to make an appointment with your doctor to rule out anything more serious.
Hello. I had my breast augmentation and a lift on one of the breasts 5 days ago. I dont feel any pain just muscle pressure and its getting better every day. One of my breasts is larger then the other. My doctir said that its normal and it will take few weeks for the swealling go away Nd then both of the breasts will be same size.. is that realky normal? Also under my left breast that was a lift and enlargement there are some blue marks that are turning yellow now. Is that normal? No pain at all. Thank you
Hi Nelly! Noticing some asymmetry this soon after surgery is totally normal. Not only are you likely seeing some residual swelling, depending on how your implants were placed, they may “drop and fluff” at different rates, leading to a temporarily uneven appearance. Give it a few weeks and if you’re still noticing a big difference in size, reach back out to your surgeon. As for the blue/yellow marks, some bruising is normal, particularly with the breast lift procedure. The yellow should begin to fade soon.

While I cannot diagnose your specific issue without seeing you in person, the come-and-go “electric current” sensation that you describe is quite common as nerve endings heal after many types of breast surgery, including implant removal. This can begin early after surgery (as in Ashelley’s case above) and continue for several months; everyone is different. If you find this bothersome, get in touch with your plastic surgeon. And of course, keep up with your scheduled follow-up visits; these are important to ensure the healing process is going well and a great chance to ask questions. Best of luck!

At three weeks post-op it is not unusual to have significant swelling. This can cause aches and soreness too, but if you’re in a lot of discomfort, get in touch with your plastic surgeon. They will want to know if pain is getting worse, and checking in may help ease your worries. Good luck!
I’m still having daily pain and swelling from a breast reduction performed in May. Is this abnormal?
Some mild, intermittent pain and swelling 6 months after breast reduction surgery isn’t unheard of and isn’t necessarily a problem, but I encourage you to contact your doctor to rule out any issues, especially if your symptoms are getting worse.

i am having sharp pains on the upper part of my breast .It is hard to sleep at times on my sides. my surgery was on June 29,18 . i do not live in that state anymore so it is hard to fly back and forth to see my Dr i would like to know if this is normal and if not am i able to see a Dr in the emergency room or in my area

Some brief, intermittent pains may continue for several months as nerves heal. However, if you were my patient I would be concerned about pain that interferes with sleep. If you cannot make the trip to see your original surgeon, do see a board certified plastic surgeon or primary care doctor near you to rule out any problems.

I had an uplift with implants 3 weeks ago. I had an infection in my right breast 8 days after surgery. I got given antibiotics for 1 week.
10 days later I am still getting sharp pains in my right breast, and really hurts when trying to get myself out of bed. My wounds are a little red and still bleeding at times with a yellow look where my scars join..
My right breast hurts when I lift my arm in the air.

Certain pains are normal and some discharge is expected as your incisions heal, but I’m concerned with your description of your incisions. Hi i had a breast uplift and implant 2 and 1/2 weeks ago and for the past week am having unberable nipple sensitivity ro the point were i cant bare antything being near them its really getring me down is there anything other than massage and anti inflammatory medication that will help.
Hi Diane! Heightened nipple sensitivity is totally normal after breast augmentation, though we know how uncomfortable and frustrating it can be. Depending on where your incisions are placed, you may find that that using pasties or a piece of gauze to keep your nipples from rubbing against your clothing may help alleviate some of the discomfort. I advise against the use of bandaids, which are often recommended online, because the adhesive can be harsh for some on the sensitive breast skin. You can affix gauze with paper medical tape.

I had a bit of a six-pack pre-surgery one week ago. Now I am so bloated that I look pregnant. I didn’t overeat. It’s all water weight it seems. I feel two sizes bigger. Anyone else experiencing this and what did you do to alleviate the bloating?

Make sure you’re drinking plenty of water and eating healthy, fibrous foods. Hi I had breast implants 2 weeks ago. One breast feels soft (this has always been the bigger boob) and in fact feels like no implant is in there. My left breast has a bigger implant in then last time. It still feels hard and a diff shape to the other one.very tender nipple at times. Hoping this is all normal! Also what sort of bra is best! So confusing, I’m in a sports bra, but do I wear a push up one or normal sports bra that fit well so they don’t move. Sorry long post!!

Hi Mary! It’s hard to say if it’s normal without seeing you, but I wouldn’t be overly concerned if the larger breast implant takes a bit more time to fully settle than the smaller implant. If you are having any excessive pain or the breasts look odd, please do schedule a follow-up with your surgeon! As for bras, stick with your surgical bra or a soft sports bra until you get the go-ahead from your surgeon to wear normal bras. It’s important that you don’t put too much pressure on your healing incisions. Good luck!
I’m 7 months post op, and i still have ocassional shooting pain everyday, where my incisions were, and inside my breast. Is that normal? Also one breast (the naturally larger one) has seemed to drop and skin stretched alot more than the other. Is that also normal? Or, is it possible theres a leak?

The shooting pain you’re experiencing may still be your nerves healing, but I would keep an eye on it and alert your surgeon if it doesn’t improve, lasts for a long time, or happens frequently. As for your breast implants dropping at a different rate, this could be normal, but I would keep an eye on it. It likely isn’t a leak, but there is the possibility of another complication. It may be time to schedule a follow-up with your surgeon to make sure everything is okay.
I’m about 7 days post op and one breast keeps turning slightly red on the upper half of the breast .. above the nipple not near the incision .. is there reason for this ? Should I be concerned
Hi Kennedy! Do you have any tenderness or swelling in the area? The redness could be the result of your bandages, surgical bra, etc., but please be sure to keep an eye on it in case an infection or other complication is developing. 6 days post op from a lift w implants…reading everyones post has helped tremendously! I am currently experiencing swelling in the breast but I am wearing my jeans so not so much other than the breasts…today I was able to get out of the house and drive to Walgreens and Chic fil a 😁 my appetite is good and after experiencing a roller coaster of feelings today is so much better seen as I was able to leave the house…I know I still have alot of healing and pray ot goes well and am thankful for such a great husband…I WISH EVERYONE WELL!

Just wanted to say thank you for your post. I’m three days post op and cried a lot when I took off the bandages and kept crying today…I look ridiculous with two big tight circles stuck on my chest. I went subglandular and not very large becasue I’m an athlete, so the pain has been minimal, but I’m just really upset about how high and tight they are. I’ve had such regret. All the sites say be patient, wait three months, but I’m so frightened they’ll look ‘bolted on’ forever. Somehow hearing about others’ buyers remorse makes me feel better. But I’m still scared! I wish more doctors would post galleries of immediate post-op AND three month photos so we can all feel better….!
Becky, I’m so glad this post and the responses were helpful. The “boobie blues” is totally normal after breast augmentation—and while it’s hard to be patient, your breasts will slowly settle into a more natural position. Particularly this soon after surgery, it is absolutely normal for your breasts to be high and tight. Your body needs some time to heal and accommodate the breast implants. Hang in there! Chances are that in just a few short months, you’ll be loving your new breasts!
Yolanda. I also have a pleat or small fold just under my breast after lift and I am 3 weeks post op. Did yours go away? I also have a feeling of fire from my nipple in same breast not blood red but hot sensation.
It’s 3 weeks since I had my 430cc put in under the muscle. While I expect some pain post surgery I didn’t think it was going to be anything like this. I am following the doctors orders and wearing a tighter fit sports bra that zips up in the front but the pain from the band on my incisions is unbearable. I can’t sit or sleep comfortably because of the pain. I’ve tried using gaze as a away to cushion the band from the incisions but it does nothing. Now I’m having serious pain on the left side of my breast. I took the pain meds prescribed the first few days. I’ve tried taking Tylenol but it doesn’t absolutely nothing. I do my messages to help them settle and make sure the pocket stats open but it’s painful to do. I’ve already slightly opened up one spot on my right breast incision which has white fluid kinds coming out if it. Is any of this normal?! I was not expecting this much pain!
Hi Taylor! If you’re still in a considerable amount of pain, I highly recommend scheduling a follow-up with your surgeon or setting an appointment with your primary physician. While everyone heals differently and has a unique tolerance for pain, the discomfort is usually manageable with OTC pain relievers by this point. I also recommend you avoid wearing any garments that put any pressure on your healing incisions. While you want your breasts to be supported, a tight sports bra is not a great option as it can irritate your incisions, slow your healing process, or even create complications. Good luck!
I am 3 weeks post-op and when I reach to the left of right I can feel the implant rub against the crease of my chest and wanted to know if this is normal since it happens in both breast. I don’t want to ignore the issue is it a possibility of both implants shifting to one side which is my biggest fear. I have no other complications

You are likely feeling the breast implant shift within the breast pocket as swelling goes down and the implant is less constrained. That being said, please do keep an eye on it and be sure to let your surgeon know your concers; a quick exam can help put your mind at ease and is a great way to catch any complications before they worsen. I’m 1 month post op and I went under muscle and my incision is underboob. My right incision has been uncomfortable since day one but since I’ve gotten my stiches out it hasn’t been as bad. Until yesterday morning when my 45 pound dog stepped on my boob right near my incision. Now if I even touch that boob or do my massages it is EXTREMELY painful and idk if it’s cause it’s getting ready to get in the pocket or if I need to go to my dr. I have a follow up next week but idk if I should wait
Hi Ashley! It’s normal to have some lingering pain around the incision sites, particularly this soon after surgery—but only you can determine if something feels abnormal. If you have any worries about that incision at all or are concerned that your pup caused some accidental trauma, I encourage you to schedule a follow-up exam with your surgeon.
I had a breast augmentation and lift 4 months ago and I am having sharp pains in my incisions and throughout my breast randomly. Is that normal for that long after the surgery?
Hi Jessie! Twinges of sharp or shooting pain can continue for up to six months after surgery as your nerve ending heal. If this pain is happening frequently, disrupting sleep, or accompanied by other symptoms, I would give your surgeon a call. In fact, if you have any worries at all, it won’t hurt to request a follow-up appointment or speak with someone at the practice about your concerns.
Hi -this post has been so helpful. I’m 2 days post op for my breast implants under the muscle. I am still in pain but I know it’s early days. But I am a bit concerned as the swelling on my right side is worse than my left. My right side of the breast and all the way round to my armpit is really swollen. Is this normal??

Hi Louise! Swelling typically does not occur symmetrically and can be dependent on so many factors. When implants are placed under the muscle, it’s normal to experience some swelling up to the armpit, as the pectoral muscle underwent some trauma during surgery. Keep an eye on it, follow your surgeon’s aftercare instructions, and don’t hesitate to call your nurse or surgeon about your concerns. It’s always better to be safe and proactive!
Hello: I got implants I August 2016 I am still sore sometimes and my aunt incision line I received a 350 mL implants. It could be that nipple sensitivity is unrelated to your breast implants (hormones, menstruation, etc. can all cause nipple sensitivity). And while an occasional twinge or pain or soreness at the incision isn’t unheard of, your surgeon can take a look to make sure everything is doing okay.
Hello, I had my breast done 6 months ago but lately my silicone become noticeable. Pain is with the range of 6-7. Redness on the lower part of my right breast noted for 10 days now. Taking analgesic can relieve the pain. Is it normal?

Just over 7 weeks post surgery and had to return to my business as a fitness instructor. I checked with my surgeon first. I teach fitness classes and rebound classes. I have taught 2 classes so far and now my chest wall feels very sore and i am experiencing some discomfort all around my left breast. Particularly underneath around the incision site, also to the medial side of the breast. I am also getting sharp like needle pains in my nipples which had subsided before going back to work..The left breast seems to be the one that is taking longer to heal. There is no redness or swelling. The left breast has seemed to have dropped slightly but not significantly. I am wondering if what i am experiencing is muscle tenderness from reusing my pecs again and the needle pains are because of the increase in blood pressure during exercise. I am just a little concerned i may have done some damage. My surgeon was super impressed with the way i had rested after my op for a very active person and at just over 5 weeks he checked everything was ok and said at 6 weeks to start exercise again. I am now a little concerned as i am now awake at 1.20am in the morning feeling rather sore.
Hi there! While following your surgeon’s advice is key, it’s also important to listen to your body—which may be telling you that you’re not quite ready yet. The soreness can absolutely be from working muscles that have been ignored during your recovery, but it’s so crucial to take it slow and make sure you aren’t pushing yourself. To ease your concerns, don’t hesitate to be in touch with your surgeon—even if everything is fine, peace of mind can be invaluable. I am 13 days post op and my right nipple (larger implant) is protruding out but the left nipple (smaller implant) is fine. I sent surgeon a picture said this is normal. Anyone else have this happen?
I just had a reaugmentation done less than a week ago (silicone). This is my second reaugmentation as I’ve had two separate saline ruptures over the course of the past 18 years. The first reaugmentation was done by my original surgeon who has since retired so this time around it was a different surgeon. This new surgeon is insisting that I begin wearing underwire bras now and that I also wear them to bed. He also insists that one of his medical team members inspect the bras his patients purchase to ensure a correct fit prior to actually wearing them. I get that a properly fitting and supportive bra is key but the two bras that were approved are extremely tight and constricting to where it’s uncomfortable to breathe. There is NO way I could wear either one of them all night long and what I’m reading online is that wearing a bra to bed could actually cause more harm than good. What is your opinion on bras?
Hi Tami! I would not recommend wearing an underwire bra this soon after your surgery. In fact, I typically have my patients wait around 4 – 6 weeks before wearing traditional bras. That’s because your incisions need time to heal and your breasts can go through many changes during the first few weeks. Ultimately, your comfort is what matters, and wearing an underwire bra to bed is not going to have a large impact on your breasts one way or another.
Hi there I am 10 months post op from my breast augmentation and at my right breast gives me mild pain and some discomfort on my scar, in the center of my chest and recently near my under arm. This breast feels tight all the time and one small area of it near the inside of it by my cleavage feels “wobbly” or numb. My breasts look perfect my scars look minimal and I dont feel sick or unwell at all. Did I accidentally do something to my breast if while I was 6 weeks post op I woke up sleeping on my chest accidentally on 3 occasions? Your expertise is greatly appreciated as my surgeon believes that this is scar tissue pain 🙁

Although I cannot offer any specific advice without seeing you in person, it is unlikely that you caused any harm to your breast by accidentally rolling over onto your chest in your sleep 6 weeks after surgery, especially if you have successfully slept on your back most of the time to that point. What would concern me if you were my patient was is that one breast continues to feel very tight. Since it seems that you are still concerned after visiting with your plastic surgeon, I might recommend you get a second opinion with a different experienced board certified plastic surgeon in your area to rule out the possibility of capsular contracture. Hi, I had my breast augmentation done 2 days ago (400cc hp under the muscle) and I am still in so much pain, it is so much worse than I thought it would be. They are so swollen and feel rock hard and numb, and when I move my torso to try to sit up out of bed it hurts so much where the incisions are. I feel I can barely move so just been sitting in bed all day. My boobs look so much bigger than I thought they would, it’s all making me quite depressed. Is any of this normal or do I need to get medical attention with it?
Hi Karin, thanks for reaching out. After only two days, it is normal for swelling to be close to peak level, which is likely making your breasts appear larger than they ultimately will be. Everyone is different, and discomfort can be pretty intense for some for the first few days. That said, your initial recovery should be spent resting and taking care of yourself—not worrying about your body. At 2 days, you should have a follow-up scheduled very soon with your plastic surgeon; if not, call them! It’s much better to have things looked over than to wonder if something is amiss, and your surgeon can also help you find ways to improve your comfort after ruling anything out. Best wishes!
Hi! I had my BA done exactly a week ago. I am still not able to use the bathroom and starting to get stomach aches due to constipation. How many days out should I wait to contact my doctor? Besides this, I absolutly love my new breasts, I highly recommend it to anyone. I still have stiffness when I get out of bed and sometimes pain with incision, but nothing unbearable. I found that the pain did not ease until day 5 after they took the tape off. 405cc will hopefully put me at full C, fingers crossed for small D. Every woman should love their body!

Hi Chelsea, So glad to hear that you love your new breasts—that’s our favorite thing about our work here. As for your other issue….constipation is quite normal after surgery and while on pain medication, as we mentioned in the post. However, if you have not had a bowel movement in a week and you’re feeling considerable discomfort, it’s worth calling your doctor for a recommendation on a safe laxative to use until things smooth out a bit 😉 Dietary changes may also help—make sure you are eating enough fruits and veggies, and drink plenty of water every day. I got my breasts done 4 years ago, and one of them has dropped more than the other and looks larger. I feel like this has happened recently (in the last 6 months).
What could be the cause of this? I want to get it checked, but I got them done in another state and haven’t been able to find a doctor closer to home to do a check up

While it can be helpful to see the same surgeon who performed your breast augmentation, this is by no means a requirement. Where are you located? Just had two silicone implants placed 4 days ago after 3 rounds of fat grafting (separate surgeries) and after my initial bilateral mastectomy in December 2016. I appreciated everyone’s thoughtful comments! I’m still all wrapped like a mummy. I go see my ps for my post-op visit this Tuesday. It’s been a long road. I’m only taking Tylenol, Motrin, and antibiotics. Only took pain meds on day 1 and 2. I’m tired as all hell and very happy I’m home. I’m in New York on Long Island. (Can you hear my accent?) Thanks for being here. It was nice not to feel alone at 11:00 pm on a Sunday night!

Two weeks after breast augmentation. Much of this information has eased minor concerns like nipple sensitivity and strange electrical sharp sensations, which now I know it’s nerve endings healing. However, rather unusual difference in size between my breasts. One is bigger than the other, not higher or lower just bigger all around. I don’t feel swollen, maybe very minimally and equally tight and I feel that my pain level is normal for this stage. Somewhere maybe around a 4/5 and not constant. I want to believer that the size difference will correct itself. I found myself covering up my chest in public today and realized how much this size difference bothers me. Thank you in advance…
Hi there! It is very normal for post-op swelling to affect each breast differently, and subside at a different rate too. By now you are likely about 6 weeks post op; hopefully you have found that the size difference is resolving naturally. That said, never hesitate to contact your plastic surgeon if you have any concerns, even months or years after surgery. **I am now 15 days post op breast augmentation. on the 12th day my left breast started leaking like a faucet out of nowhere in the middle of the night from my incision. My top was soaked. I went to the Dr the next day and he gave me two antibiotics to take but said there’s no sign of infection. My left breast is now a little sore but I don’t have this huge lump on my chest anymore on that side and it feels normal. I stopped leaking that same day. My right breast still has fluid in it. It’s uncomfortable, swollen & tight. My Dr said the bodily fluids should absorb naturally. Is there anything I can do to make the fluids on my right breast absorb faster?! It is getting painful. I’d rather he drain the right breast and go through the sharp pains for 24hrs and get this over with.

I had an augmentation on 2/27/20919 so it has been 5 weeks today. My left breast has dropped and looks amazing, though my right is still as high as can be and has the tornado shape, one week away from today is the 6 week mark and I have been told that’s when they should drop by. I am worried. I feel like I need to do something but my surgeon states its normal, any advise? I am NOT down with two entirely different looking breasts.
Hello Caitlyn, although many patients do have their breast implants “drop and fluff” by the six-week mark, everyone is different, and it is not unusual for this process to take up to 3 months. You indicate that you have brought up your concerns with your plastic surgeon, which is great—maintain that relationship, and give yourself a little more time. Typically, we recommend that patients wait a minimum of 6 months, preferably a year, before considering any revision for cosmetic reasons.
Hi! I just had my breast augmentation done 2 days ago. That second night was terrible. Both of my breast are swollen, very sore, very hard, I couldnt sleep. I know its normal to ger inflated but I just feel like this is not right
Hi Virginie, I’m sorry to hear you are so uncomfortable. Post-op swelling often peaks around 3 to 4 days after surgery, so it is not unusual for swelling to increase before it starts to subside. I got breast implants 2 days ago and it feel like i can take a deep breath. And I feel alot of anxiety.

Had Implant replacement for CC only on one side three weeks ago its till tight and sore and looks smaller is this normal on a revision replacemt is the soften and fluff still happen when doing a revision implant replacment?
Hi Cynthia, yes, the “drop and fluff” stage will still occur with implant replacement. If you were treated for capsular contracture, the plastic surgeon should have removed the old capsule. A new capsule will form with the new implant. Be patient, good luck, and don’t hesitate to contact your plastic surgeon if you have any questions or concerns.

I’m 2 1/2 weeks after my surgery (245cc beneath the muscle) and the left side looks more swollen then the left side (which make sense), but it’s also looks a bit higher the right one (about 1 or 2 cm).
Is it normal? I know it takes time until everything settles but just to make sure. I didn’t get any instructions to do a massage but I thought it might help.

Thanks for the helpful site. I had augmentation surgery almost 2 weeks ago. Dressings came off a week ago and all looked great. But in the last couple of days the pain has got worse, particularly in the right side, and the shape on the right side has changed – the contour is not as round and smooth as on the left, and I’m worried the implant might have shifted. They are small implants (250cc), recommended by my surgeon because of my small frame and because I didn’t have much excess skin.
Hello do you prescribe preventative antibiotics post implant replacement with no lift? My Dr. did.. I don’t want to take them unless I have an infection. My left breast is a little more sore and swollen than right.. mild fever since surgery under 100.4? Minimal pain. No redness

While I cannot provide direct medical advice, I can tell you that if you were my patient, I would be concerned that you are not taking your antibiotics as prescribed. While I understand not wanting to take any more medication than necessary, your doctor prescribed these for a reason. I am also concerned that you have a fever—you should see your doctor as this is a sign of possible infection.
To address your initial question, I prescribe medication on a case-by-case basis, as every patient’s needs are different. Again, your plastic surgeon prescribed the antibiotics because she or he believed they were in your best interest. Please call your doctor, and I wish you the best as you continue to recovery.
I had my surgery 5 weeks ago. I had 350cc over the muscle with my incision under my nipple. I’m not having any pain and my breasts look great. My problem however is that my incision line is hard and very bumpy to the touch. Is this normal? I went to the tanning bed twice (covered up my incision line I thought) did I do permanent damage?
Good morning Hunter, Without seeing you and examining your scars in person, I cannot tell you whether you did permanent damage. It is possible that tanning darkened or thickened your scars, as the skin will still be very “young” and sensitive just 5-weeks post-op, even though the incisions have healed; it is also possible that your scars will flatten and fade over time. A hard, bumpy scar that is confined to the incision line is also characteristic of a hypertrophic scar, which can sometimes occur. Hypertrophic scars are not harmful, and they can be treated with therapies such as silicone sheets, steroid injections, or laser treatments. If you are concerned about the appearance of your scars, see your plastic surgeon. They will be able to recommend an appropriate treatment option. Good luck!
hi there…i am a month out today from breast augmentation and i still have shooting pain, muscle spasm and some asymmetric in left side breast…its very tender around incision site and get shooting pains for no reason..lol..i can have a sports bra on and move slightly and it twings with pain…so glad i read these comments as i was little concerned but it seems its all normal..:-) i also have muscle contraction it feels like just sitting at work…
1 week post double mastectomy with reconstruction with 605ccs each. One breast is higher than the other from the looks of the top of chest. They line up on the bottom. Is this normal? I feel like one is going to be so much higher than the other yet they are both the same size implant. The one that appears higher and more swollen feels so tight when I breathe in
I had my breast implants 565 cc silicone and a lift done in February. They have since dropped and fluffed. And they are sooo small and so low. And actually they feel too soft. They look horrible in my eyes. This may sound sound silly but they look too real. I wanted them to be perky and sexy. I just have a a little bigger set of mom boobs. With scars on them now. Is this normal? Or should I be saying something to my surgeon. I just feel like I coulda done something else for 10k then have a heavier set of mom boobs.
Hi Nicole, First of all, you are not silly at all. Everyone has her own idea of what a great result looks like, and I am sorry that you are disappointed in how you look now. Seeing as you wrote about three months after your surgery, it is very likely that your breasts will change a little more. Even so, I encourage you to talk to your plastic surgeon and be honest about your feelings. That is what I would want if you were my patient. Good luck!
I had my first BA in 2003 this is my 2nd BA I am six days post op my left breast is smaller and softer than the right breast the left breast is making a gurgling swooshing sound and when I bend over or get up from sitting or laying down the implant moves and it feels like it’s falling out of the pocket or slipping from under the muscle I have to place my hand under my breast to keep the implant in place or to push it back in the pocket or under the muscle also it is very uncomfortable and painful when it moves is this normal because I’m worried and not happy with the results of my BA

I am 8 days post. In my left breats I am experiencing some pulled muscle like pains even when relaxed under and over the implant. It almost felt like theres something in there besides the implant that is driving me crazy like a rock in my shoe. The right one feels 100% fine. I massage both of them and they are very soft but it hurts to massage the left. I also notice when massaging my left one likes to try to slide into my armpit. Like the picked on that side is bigger and father over. My left breast is starting to drop lower and the nipple looks lower. About 1/2 inch. I was a 32 B and had 375 mid plus silicone implants through the armpit. My left armpit is sore aswell. I went back to work after 7 days and have done light activities with my arms. (folding laundry at 4 days post op. ) Could I have bothered something ?

I had 375 cc silicone implants under the muscle 13 days ago. My right one feels normal but my left one is dropping a little faster (1inch) and feels very strange.(feels like a pulled muscles and when I madsge the inplant ir had a painful stuffed and scratchy feeling inside). Also I can feels many ripples all over the underside of that left breast. I had very good breast tissue before (perky B cups ) and didnt have thin skin also I work out regularly I’m not buff but in fit. I’m 5’2″ 125lbs if that matters. Why can I feel the ripples if my implant is under the muscle ? Did my muscle tear ? I’m 100% sure it’s the implant and it feels like its rubbing wrong inside aswell. Will this go away ? Any advice on where to have it fixed if it bottoms out ?
I had my breast reduction almost a year ago (6/26/2018) and my right breast appears to be the perfect size/shape! Unfortunately my left breast is almost a full cup size smaller and the nipple has never popped back out. Is this normal? Hello, I am four weeks post op from my ba. And while I understand there are quite a few symptoms that are normal during the recovery process (tingling, shooting pain, numbness, hypersensitivity, swelling, etc). My one breast is still considerably more tender than the other, especially on the lateral portion.No redness, warmth or signs of infections or asymmetry (other than L breast remains high still. I just wanted reassurance, I keep getting told to trust the process and I am a nurse by trade, but this healing process has turned me into a worry wort. Also I still have subcutaneous emphysema on the inside and outside breast crease. I know this is also normal, but I feel it should be healed by now?
Hi I had a great augmentation in October gone, and I feel like my right boob the implant is so low I can feel the bottom of the implant when I touch underneath near the incision and it is very saggy. Is it normal

I had my surgery on the 18th so today is day 4 and I’m having a real burning sensation in my left boob. It’s a burning sensation all over the boob. My right boob feels fine (still sore but fine), is this normal? It hurts especially if I move and I don’t know jf it’s just my head overreacting or if I should take this pain seriously. Hi. I had a breast augmentation done just over four months ago. My right breast feels completely fine and recovered great. But my left breast was always more numb for up to the three month mark and now I feel that only 1/2 of the breast is numb and a super/very sensitive nipple. Is this normal. Thanks

Hu! I’m 3 1/2 months post of and still have mild pain on and off throughout the day and sometimes sharp twinges of pain. is this normal? I’m afraid I did damage sleeping on my side some of the time and waking up on my stomach during the night.
I am eight weeks out from a breast augmentation and am having some bleeding from one incision. I’ve talked to the NP at my surgeon’s office a couple times and she isn’t concerned but I haven’t been able to speak to my doctor. It is enough to soak my bra a couple times a day every day. Other than this everything feels fine and I am not swollen anymore or have any other kind of pain. But my incision on just the one breast is so inflamed and irritated. Coupled with the bleeding I am concerned. Should I push the issue with the NP and demand to see my surgeon or is this really just a normal part of the healing process? My main concern comes from having had a c-section in the past and my body healing so much faster from what is a more invasive surgery.

I had my BA in July it’s almost 5 months. My left breast is hard, sits higher than the right breast. it feels like it’s under my arm pit and it’s shaped like a torpedo. My right breast is soft and it dropped. It looks and feel natural.
My surgeon told me to keep massaging it, and my only option is to take out the implants. And if I put it back in I’ll have the same issue again.
I’m 5ft 2in 115lbs, and I feel like my surgeon made my breast to big for my frame.
Any advice?

Hi, I had a breast augmentation with saline implants (650cc) 5 days ago and I keep experiencing this odd pain in my right upper arm. It feels like a nerve is being pinched. I’m just wondering if it’s normal or if anyone else has experienced this.
Hi i am 10 days post breast augmentation. I am 6foot tall and 69 kgs. i was getting 365cc but surgeon and staff all felt that i would easily pull off 410cc.(was an a cup or very small b) op was successful and has done an amazing job, however i am very anxious about how big they are look very out of proportion and “top” heavy how long do they take to soften and for swelling to go down. currently regretting getting them. Easily a size d at moment but wanted more like a small c. Is it likely to settle a whole cup size with swelling?
Yes, they will get smaller as swelling goes down and they settle. But I’d after 6 months you feel they are too big then it is very easy to go smaller.

Pain usually goes away in a couple of days but for a few patients pain can persist for months. Acupuncture and pain specialists can help. But if it doesn’t get better you may need to consider explanation
I had surgery a week ago I have Silicone under the muscle implants. Just today I noticed a lump on the top of my implant which it’s a little painful to the touch and also just because. Should I be worried?
Yes you can get Silicone implants at 18 but need to sign a release from the warranty

Anxiety, guilt and worry are all normal early on. This is a big change in body image. However with supportive care from my staff and your loved ones patients overwhelmingly are thrilled in the end

Be patient. Implants can soften and style for 6-12 months. However after that time any significant asymmetry is like permanent and my require revision

I really wish my surgeon or my surgeon’s team let me know at all about the drop and fluff process before I had surgery. I swear I did hours of research, but when I read up online about “swelling and tightness” I didn’t translate that in my mind to the breasts looking square and misshapen and low nipples for up to 3 months. You cannot imagine my horror looking at my misshapen breasts 3 days post op for the first time ever on a Saturday, when the office was closed till Monday! Thanks again

I had to have a double mastectomy w/reconstruct. It’s been a yr this Nov and my Surgeon hasn’t done the revision on my right breast and says he won’t til my insurance agee’s to more fat grafting. He didn’t do much fat grafting last time due to he had to replace left implant. It had flipped and stayed flipped. He revised the left breast but not the right. Now it’s flipping around alot. And the right is harder and looks fuller then the left. What should I do? Please help.

Hi. I got my textured saline implants in 1997. . Three months ago I developed out of the blue a large lump. I also have terrible pain that comes and goes with swelling in both breasts. I have also lost over 40 pounds without trying in the past 7 months. I have been trying to get a mri for months but no doctor will send me for one. I did get a ultrasound and my implants are intact. They also said
nothing was wrong. I’m afraid I have Alcl. Non hodgkin’s lymphoma.
You should absolutely seek out a board certified PS for evaluation and treatment. I would recommend a replacement with a nontextured implant and pathologic evaluation of your capsule and the mass that you describe. You absolutely need to rule out ALCL. Check the AMerican Society of Plastic Surgery website for a referral near your home

I had my subfascial BA with a lift one week ago. The implants are Motiva round 205 cc. My surgeon suggested this placement because i have very thin tissue and almost no fat in my upper body. Everything went perfect, no pain, no major discomfort. However, today i noticed a couple of ripples on my right breast when i pull off my medical bra i am wearing post op. These were not present until today. I am wondering if this could be part of the process where they are supposed to drop and settle… is there any chance for these to disappear once the implant reaches the “final destination”?
It is early, things will change over 3-6 months. If after that time you have concerns about shape, look or feel discuss with your surgeon treatment options
I had a breast lift with implants (640cc) on November 16. I appear to be healing pretty good (especially based on the thread/experience of the others comments I’ve read. I am having a bit a yellowish fluid leaking from my left breast and wondering if this is a normal part of the healing process or is it a sign of something abnormal. I had my procedure done on in a state where I don’t live (however reached out to the surgeon’s office that performed my procedure and waiting to hear back..my concern is the “waiting” could this be an infection and could this worsen as I wait) or is this typically a normal pet of the healing process. No fever, not feeling terrible (just the regular feeling of healing after such an invasive procedure) I’m want to make sure I’m not panicking and self diagnosing myself with an issue I don’t have, but also that I’m not being naive in hopes of “wanting” all to be ok…Please advise. “Leaking fluid” is not normal and needs to evaluated as soon as possible
I had BA on Monday, today I got the stitches out and the incision was red, but it’s not hurting, I had the 1st surgery BA in August 3wks later my left side didn’t heal and the skin opened up, I was cut under the breast too, bc it was exposed I had the implant removed, so here I am 3 months later getting the one breast redone and the incision is red, he went in through the nipple this time, but the last time I broke out under my arm and the center of my chest from the cotton snap sports bra, I’m once again in the same bra. The nurse said it’s most likely irritation. Surgeon put me on antibiotics for a week since I finished the antibiotics he wrote me when he sent me home on Tuesday, I have to send a pic of the incision on this coming Tuesday to him, Is that normal this early for incision to be red and I have no fever? I’m hoping it’s irritated, this has been a long process
No reddness is ever normal, you should been seen by your plastic surgeon promptly

I am a week after the breast augmentation surgery … I wanted a natural, not too large 34 c … I liked the size of 380 cc on a trial fitting … after the operation I got 425 cc … why did the doctor decide on such a large size … I don’t like it and I’m depressed … what can I do now?
Is it a saline implant? As they are overfilled as a standard. If not I would still not worry. I don’t know why the surgeon would use a different size. Clearly there was a misunderstanding between you and him. However, 30cc is a shot glass, a small difference. Once the swelling resolves and the implant settles and softens I think you will be happy
I’m three days post OP and so happy I came across this blog. I’m 38 very athletic, 5’3, 125lbs, petite framed with no children. Naturally was a full B but saggy and deflated from gaining and losing weight. Was suppose to get 250cc (or smaller) with a lift and not large as I wanted a natural look, but more volume. My surgeon went with 295cc silicone gummy high profile over the muscle with gala flex mesh lift. She did not end up doing a lift (Mastopexy) as she said 295cc filled my breasts enough. I’ve been crying for days. They look like torpedoes, they point outward and my nipples look stretched out. Anatomically I have a breast gap of a few inches, but I feel like I have major side boob and as if my boobs go outward. I hate how it looks. I know she said the gummy implants will soften, but will they “fall” into place and look more natural? I was on the fence between going under/over the muscle but she said because I’m athletic to go over the muscle. Having major regrets. I look too heavy with torpedoes that do not look natural at 3 days post op. 😭
you need patience as things will change dramatically over the next several months. If after 3-6 months you are still not happy you should discuss with the operating surgeon or seek a secondary consultation. Good Luck!

I accidentally moved my arm too quickly and I felt my peck muscle flex and it HURT! I am now having pain on and off shoot down my arm, it is slightly more swollen than my right but not a significant difference. Is arm pain normal after breast augmentation? I’m 4 days post op.

Massage depends on the patient. There is no “one way”. Call your surgeon and be seen in the office.
I’m 18 days PO And my back is killing me and my right incision is burning and hurts when I’m not sitting . It’s not Red , looks fine . Is this all normal ? I know it takes awhile but It’s hard to do normal activities with this burning pain .

Hi! I’m 1 week & 5 days post op breast revision with capsulorrhaphy , mastopexy. I’m 720ccs in my left boob & 760ccs on my right, everything’s been going well. I experienced regular bruising up until now, which all turned yellow. Two days ago, i noticed a new bruise ( i believe ) on my left breast on the bottom near my armpit area but on my breast, its a little big & its now a blueish-yellowish color. It isn’t swollen, it doesn’t hurt & its not lumpy at all. I read that bruises only last up to two weeks so i’m a little worried as to why a new one came out.
I was wondering if it is normal to get a new bruise & freaking out over if its a hematoma. Pleaseeee help! thank you

I got a mastectomy 8 years ago. It is still tight feeling in my chest a bit & when I left my arms above my head when laying down it is still tight & uncomfortable feeling in my chest. I was suppose to get a second surgery for contracture, but my doctor & plastic surgeon both wanted the other’s approval for the surgery & neither would budge on who was to give approval first so my insurance would cover it & then my son was young & scared about me getting more surgery & the pain ended up going away from the contracture on it’s own so I didn’t get the surgery. I’m wondering if this is normal to have this tightness? Not sure if my insurance would cover the cost of a nother surgery since it’s been about 7 years since I’ve even seen my plastic surgeon & she’s not in my area any more, nor do I have a regular doctor either, but still wondering if I got another surgery would I be free of the discomfort & tightness when I lift my arms above my head? Also how much does this type of surgery cost if I have to pay for it myself? It’s been a long time having this discomfort & starting to suspect it’s not normal like I’ve been assuming it is. My doctors I don’t think gave me enough information about any of this or what’s normal or if I should have gotten follow up check up or anything for me to do myself for self care.
seek out an experienced surgeon in revisional breast reconstruction. Gov’t law mandates that your surgery is covered by insurance if it is related to breast cancer. If your insurance company gives you a hard time report them to your state board. Good Luck!
Im 8 day past my surgery date for lift with implant . My right breast cramps up when ever I use my arm or when I tents up it hurt so bad when I relax it goes away

Hi there, healers. I just had my 2nd augmentation done. My first one done by Dr Reedy also lasted 22 years and probably could’ve gone longer. It was the best thing I ever did for both. I know the first few days/weeks is hard but it gets better and it’s so worth it! I was still happy with them 22 years later but I felt it best to replace them now before something goes wrong with them. I went from saline to gummy bear and increased a cup. I’m on day 4 and feel great! It’s so much easier the 2nd time around. I do get those zingers, the brief, sharp electrical type pains but it’s normal as I heal. The first few weeks is rough but hang in there, you will be so happy soon! 🙂
Hi there I know this is an old post. I am officially 11 weeks post op. I had a breast augmentation done 600cc’s under the muscle. My left breast hasn’t dropped at all and has developed a droopy look under the nipple where the implant is supposed to settle. My right breast has dropped and rounded out perfectly…my left breast looks odd and super high.Should I be concerned? Will my left breast ever settle?

We recommend scheduling an appointment with your plastic surgeon for a physical evaluation. It is common for breasts to heal at different rates, and a sense of tightness is possible for several weeks (if you had implants placed under the muscle, muscle tightness can take even longer to dissipate). However, we always encourage our patients to come see us if they have persistent or worsening symptoms after surgery.
It is nearly 5 months since I had my second breast augmentation (with a swapping of implants). I helped my son move a very heavy go cart and my chest hurt afterward. And I noticed that the whole area above my breast…like almost not the breast…is very swollen. It looks and feels physically swollen. And it is tight. Should I be worried?

it is not unusual to have different pain and recover especially on the side with a more complicated condition. However, you should see your PS as 10 weeks is a long time to still have pain. Good Luck!
Hi, 19 weeks ago I had breast augmentation with implants under the muscle and rhinoplasty done together during a combined surgery. Everything went well, however since the first day post op I keep having increased body temperature, which fluctuates during the day from 98.6 F to 99.86 F (37 C-37.7 C). There are no other symptoms, no pain, no discharge, no redness etc. I know that post op body temp might be increased for few days, but this has been already almost 3 weeks. Is it common?

We recommend communicating about this with your plastic surgeon, who can evaluate whether this temperature fluctuation is within the normal range of recovery or if it might be indicative of something that needs further investigation. I went for a control visit and from physical examination and ultrasound everything was fine with breast/implants (Motiva Ergonomix 2). My nose is also healing great. The surgeon says from this point everything is fine. I received prescription for Singulair for 2 months. I checked whole internet looking for a similar case, but found nothing. Have you ever experienced patient like that? I am suspecting that surgery triggered my immune system, as since recovery from Covid in 2022 it is not working as it used to before (I had a single lymphnode granuloma, which was removed, and 1-2 episodes of unknown higer body temp for few weeks, which was “reset” after catching a cold).
