Reading Breast Reduction for Men

If you are a man who has unusually large breasts, you may be a candidate for a male breast reduction (gynecomastia), a very common procedure here in Berks County and across the country. If you have excess or sagging tissue in your chest area after losing a great deal of weight, you may also benefit from a male breast reduction. This procedure is intended to give you a flatter chest with a more masculine male contour.

Of all the procedures that plastic surgeons perform, breast reduction ranks among the highest in patient satisfaction. This is a procedure that removes excess breast tissue and skin, making your chest more proportional to the rest of your body.

You may be a good candidate for breast reduction if you have any of the following conditions:

  • Breasts that are too large in proportion to your body frame
  • Skin irritation beneath the breasts
  • Restriction of physical activity due to the size and weight of your breasts
  • Feelings of self-consciousness about the large size of your breasts

Before you decide to go ahead, and before Dr. Ellenberger or Dr. Reedy can agree that you should, however, you need to understand (1) what will be done, (2) what you can expect during post-surgery recovery, and (3) the risks that come with this or any similar elective surgery.

Please contact Dr. Ellenberger’s and Dr. Reedy’s Berks County office, at Berks Plastic Surgery, to see if you are a good candidate for male breast reduction.

The Procedure

Gynecomastia employs a vertical incision technique to reduce scars. It is done on an outpatient basis under anesthesia. Excess breast tissue or fat can be removed with liposuction, excision, or a combination of the two. Excess skin can also be excised. It is important to note that Dr. Ellenberger and Dr. Reedy work with a board-certified anesthesiologist-a doctor of medicine.

Before you decide to go ahead, and before Dr. Ellenberger or Dr. Reedy can agree that you should, however, you need to understand (1) what will be done, (2) what you can expect during post-surgery recovery, and (3) the risks that come with this or any similar elective surgery.

Recovery

Similar to a breast augmentation procedure for women, male breast reduction surgery often requires that you wear a special vest or similar compression garments directly after surgery, to give you shape control. The vest lessens stress on your sutures and promotes faster healing with lower health risks.

Risks and Complications

There are risks and possible complications associated with any surgery. The specific risks and the suitability of male breast reduction surgery for a given individual can be determined only at the time of consultation. Minor complications that do not affect the outcome occur occasionally. Major complications are rare.

Dr. Ellenberger and Dr. Reedy take great care to evaluate each patient individually. They will advise you of your own unique risk profile, and enable you to compare it with that of male breast reduction candidates in general, before it’s determined whether you’re a good candidate for the procedure.

Plastic surgeons Dr. Ellenberger and Dr. Reedy can help you achieve your goals. They specialize in procedures relating to cosmetic surgery, including procedures such as facelift, breast implants, breast lift, breast reduction, liposuction and tummy tuck. Reading Liposuction for Men

In today’s world, in Berks County and elsewhere, looking and feeling good mean having a fit, well-proportioned body. For many people, however, that may seem an unreachable goal. Sometimes even a strict diet or a disciplined exercise program cannot conquer stubborn areas of excess fat.

For those who seek a smoother or better-proportioned body contour, liposuction may be the answer. Liposuction, also called lipoplasty, is a surgical procedure that removes deposits of excess fat from specific areas of the body, face or neck. It is commonly used to remove stubborn, diet- and exercise-resistant fat deposits and to sculpt the body into a slimmer profile-to slim the hips and thighs, flatten the abdomen, shape the calves and ankles or eliminate a double chin. Liposuction is most successful in people who are 20 to 35, with good skin tone and with isolated collections of fat. Results are seen almost immediately and will continue to improve as swelling subsides.

You may be a good candidate for liposuction if you desire fat removal or contouring in any of the following areas:

  • Cheeks, chin and neck
  • Upper arms
  • Breast or chest area
  • Back
  • Abdomen and waist
  • Hips, buttocks, thighs
  • Inner knee, calves and ankles

Before you decide to go ahead with liposuction, and before Dr. Ellenberger or Dr. Reedy can agree that you should, you need to understand (1) what will be done, (2) what you can expect during post-surgery recovery, and (3) the risks that come with this or any similar elective surgery.

Please contact Dr. Ellenberger’s and Dr. Reedy’s Berks County office, at Berks Plastic Surgery, to see if you are a good candidate for liposuction.

The Procedure

Liposuction is an outpatient procedure. General or sedation anesthesia is used for safety and comfort. It is important to note that Dr. Ellenberger and Dr. Reedy work with a board-certified anesthesiologist-a doctor of medicine. A wand goes through a tiny incision to melt the fat. A second wand is used to loosen and suction the fat. Compression garments or taping are advised for about four to six weeks, to reduce swelling. Before your liposuction procedure, you must stay away from products that contain epinephrine-like drugs, including cold medications.

Recovery

Initial discomfort is controlled with oral medication. When general anesthesia is employed, patients normally require one to three hours of observation afterwards, before being discharged to go home. Full recovery from swelling and bruising takes a few weeks.

Risks and Complications

There are risks and possible complications associated with any surgery. In liposuction, irregularity of the skin is one, but it is greatly minimized by our use of small-diameter cannulae, along with massage of the affected areas immediately after surgery. Hematomas and seromas are abnormal localized collections of blood or inflammatory fluid after surgery. Adequate drainage of incisions can help prevent them. Hyperpigmentation can occur, but it usually fades and may be improved by bleaching creams; the patient must stay out of the sun until all bruising is gone. Swelling of the legs and ankles also can occur, and proper compression garments can minimize these effects. Extremely rare but severe complications can include blood clots, injury to abdominal organs, excessive blood loss, allergic reactions to drugs, and cardiac arrhythmias during general anesthesia. Caution: liposuction is not recommended for weight loss and will not produce any substantial weight loss results. Liposuction is best for treating localized areas of fat.

Dr. Ellenberger and Dr. Reedy take great care to evaluate each patient individually. They will advise you of your own unique risk profile, and enable you to compare it with that of liposuction candidates in general, before it’s determined whether you’re a good candidate for the procedure.

Male Endoscopic Browlift

With age, the tissues of the face tend to droop and sag. This creates a tired heavy look to the upper eyelids as well as “crow’s feet” or wrinkles next to the eyes. Often, people will compensate for drooping eyebrows by contracting the muscles of the forehead. This creates horizontal wrinkles in the forehead, which may become quite deep. At times, people will also have hyperactive muscles between the eyebrows, which create deep creases in the lower forehead area giving a perpetual “scowl.”

Browlift may correct all of these problems, often with minimally invasive surgery.

Male Eyelid Rejuvenation

More than any other facial feature, your eyes reveal the most about how you feel. When your eyes are bright and alert, you appear energized, well-rested, and in control. However, if you have lower eyelid puffiness, dark circles or drooping upper lids, your friends and Berks County neighbors may assume that you are fatigued, angry or unhappy.

If you believe that your eyes are making you look tired, sad, or older than you really feel, cosmetic eyelid surgery (also called blepharoplasty) may be the right choice for you. Eyelid surgery can remove the excess fat and drooping skin of the upper eyelids, minimize bags under the eyes and tighten the lower eyelid skin. The result is a more alert and rested appearance. Eyelid surgery generally yields a substantial and lasting improvement.

You may be a good candidate for eyelid surgery if you have any of the following conditions:

Upper Eyelid Procedures

  • Excess skin that hides the natural fold of the upper eyelids
  • Loose skin that hangs down from the upper eyelids
  • Puffiness in the upper eyelids that creates a tired look

Lower Eyelid Procedures

  • Excess skin and fine wrinkles of the lower eyelids
  • Puffy “bags” and, in some cases, dark circles

Before you decide to go ahead, and before Dr. Ellenberger or Dr. Reedy can agree that you should, however, you need to understand (1) what will be done, (2) what you can expect during post-surgery recovery, and (3) the risks that come with this or any similar elective surgery.

Please contact Dr. Ellenberger’s and Dr. Reedy’s Berks County office, at Berks Plastic Surgery, to see if you are a good candidate for eyelid rejuvenation.

The Procedure

Eyelid rejuvenation surgery is an outpatient procedure, done under anesthesia. For the upper eyelid, Dr. Ellenberger or Dr. Reedy will make incisions that follow the natural lines of your eyelids and extend slightly beyond the outside corner into the laugh lines or other existing creases. Generally, an incision is hidden within the natural fold of the upper eyelid. Excess skin and fatty tissue are removed through this incision. The incision follows the natural contour of the upper eyelid, so it will be concealed when healed. For lower eyelid surgery, an incision is typically hidden just below the lower lashes, well camouflaged by natural creases. Eyelid surgeries generally take about one to three hours to complete. It is important to note that Dr. Ellenberger and Dr. Reedy work with a board-certified anesthesiologist-a doctor of medicine.

Recovery

Straining, bending and lifting should be avoided soon after your operation. You can resume normal activities within ten days or less. After surgery, your eyes are lubricated with ointment to reduce dryness in this area. Cold compresses reduce swelling and bruising. Sutures are removed in two to seven days after surgery. Most patients can return to work in five to ten days and resume wearing contact lenses the day after surgery.

Risks and Complications

There are risks and possible complications associated with any surgery. Complications in blepharoplasty don’t occur often, but may include infection, adverse reaction to anesthesia, and asymmetrical healing or scarring. Scars may remain slightly pink for six months or longer after surgery, but they eventually fade to a thin, virtually invisible white line.

Dr. Ellenberger and Dr. Reedy take great care to evaluate each patient individually. They will advise you of your own unique risk profile, and enable you to compare it with that of eyelid rejuvenation candidates in general, before it’s determined whether you’re a good candidate for the procedure.

Plastic surgeons Dr. Ellenberger and Dr. Reedy can help you achieve your goals. They specialize in procedures relating to cosmetic surgery, including procedures such as facelift, breast implants, breast lift, breast reduction, liposuction and tummy tuck. Allentown Tummy Tuck and Abdominoplasty for Men

In Berks County and everywhere else, a flat stomach is important to a physically fit appearance. However, a healthy diet and regular abdominal workouts sometimes can do little to eliminate accumulations of excess fat and loose, sagging skin in the abdominal area. If you are bothered by these appearance problems, abdominoplasty may be a good choice for you.

Abdominoplasty is designed to firm and smooth the abdomen. This cosmetic procedure removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen and may also tighten the muscles of the abdominal wall. The result is a flatter, tighter abdominal profile.

You may be a good candidate for abdominoplasty if you have one or more of the following conditions:

  • Excess or loose, sagging abdominal skin
  • An abdomen that protrudes and is out of proportion to the rest of the body
  • Abdominal muscles that have been weakened by pregnancy or aging
  • Excess fat that is concentrated beneath the abdominal skin

Before you decide to go ahead, and before Dr. Ellenberger or Dr. Reedy can agree that you should, however, you need to understand (1) what will be done, (2) what you can expect during post-surgery recovery, and (3) the risks that come with this or any similar elective surgery.

Please contact Dr. Ellenberger’s and Dr. Reedy’s Berks County office, at Berks Plastic Surgery, to see if you are a good candidate for abdominoplasty.

The Procedure

An abdominoplasty is an individualized procedure in which your goals are realistically determined and discussed with your surgeon. Together you will determine what specific procedures will be performed. An abdominoplasty is often performed in conjunction with other procedures such as liposuction, so that the hips can be shaped to match the smaller tummy.

You should plan on the surgery taking several hours or more, depending on the work you are having performed-full abdominoplasty, or partial abdominoplasty for patients who only need to reduce the lower belly. The surgeon will create an incision that runs along the lower waist line and then will remove excess fat and skin. The abdominal muscles will then be tightened and set into place. Full differs from partial in the extent of work done. Generally, the partial procedure does not require the navel to be separated from tissue below it, while the full procedure does. The full procedure reduces the size of the abdomen to a greater extent. The recovery period for the partial procedure is normally shorter and results in a smaller scar. It is important to note that Dr. Ellenberger and Dr. Reedy work with a board-certified anesthesiologist-a doctor of medicine.

Recovery

Some pain and swelling may occur during the first few days after the procedure. Recovery typically takes several weeks. You will be fully advised about exercise, which can help speed the process.

Risks and Complications

There are risks and possible complications associated with any surgery. Dr. Ellenberger or Dr. Reedy will discuss with you thoroughly the risks of an abdominoplasty, so you can make an informed decision on whether a tummy tuck is right for you. While very unusual, abdominoplasty complications can include a bleeding episode, infection, loss of skin sensation, skin contour irregularities, wrinkling of the skin, excessive scarring, and other undesirable results.

For these reasons especially, Dr. Ellenberger and Dr. Reedy take great care to evaluate each patient individually. They will advise you of your own unique risk profile, and enable you to compare it with that of abdominoplasty candidates in general, before it’s determined whether you’re a good candidate for the procedure.

Plastic surgeons Dr. Ellenberger and Dr. Reedy can help you achieve your goals. They specialize in procedures relating to cosmetic surgery, including procedures such as facelift, breast implants, breast lift, breast reduction, liposuction and tummy tuck. Male Rhinoplasty in Allentown, PA Area

Rhinoplasty, or surgery to reshape the nose, is one of the most common of all plastic surgery procedures, here in Berks County and across the country. Rhinoplasty can reduce or increase the size of your nose, change the shape of the tip or the bridge, narrow the span of the nostrils, or change the angle between your nose and your upper lip. The best candidates for rhinoplasty are people who are looking for improvement, not perfection, in the way they look. If you’re physically healthy and realistic in your expectations, you may be a good candidate. Rhinoplasty can be performed to meet aesthetic goals or for reconstructive purposes, to correct birth defects or breathing problems.

Before you decide to go ahead, and before Dr. Reedy can agree that you should, however, you need to understand (1) what will be done, (2) what you can expect during post-surgery recovery, and (3) the risks that come with this or any similar elective surgery.

Please contact Dr. Reedy’s Berks County office, at Berks Plastic Surgery, to see if you are a good candidate for rhinoplasty.

The Procedure

Nose surgery, or rhinoplasty, can change the size of your nose, reshape the nose, resize the nostrils, or make other adjustments to match your nose to your face. Nose surgery can be performed through slightly different procedures. In each procedure, the nose and cartilage are reshaped either by removing skin from the nose or through an incision through the nostrils.

You and your surgeon will realistically discuss and determine what specific procedures may be performed, possibly in conjunction with other procedures such as a face lift to enhance the balance of your features. It is important to have realistic expectations of what the surgery can achieve. To help you prepare for the surgery, Dr. Reedy will instruct you about physical activity, medication, drinking, smoking, and washing your face.

Surgery typically takes several hours. Afterwards, your nose will be secured and splinted. You should plan on taking about two days of rest before becoming active again, and about a week before returning to work. You will need about three weeks for full recovery. It is important to note that Dr. Reedy works with a board-certified anesthesiologist-a doctor of medicine.

Recovery

You may need someone to help you during the first few days of your recovery, since movement is discouraged. Activities that could result in injury should be avoided for six weeks (swimming, playing sports, and so on). Sexual activity, which can increase your blood pressure, should be avoided for about two weeks. You must take care in washing your face. You can wear contact lenses, but eyeglasses are not to be worn when the splint is off. Your surgeon will check on the progress of your healing in regular follow-up visits. The healing process depends very much on you. You must follow all instructions that Dr. Reedy gives you.

Risks and Complications

There are risks and possible complications associated with any surgery. A dull headache, numbness or an aching of the nose can occur after rhinoplasty. If you fail to keep your head elevated or you sleep only on one side soon after surgery, secondary surgery can become necessary. Rarely, infection (pain, redness, swelling), loss of smell, sinusitis, slow healing, and even toxic shock syndrome can occur.

Dr. Reedy takes great care to evaluate each patient individually. He will advise you of your own unique risk profile, and enable you to compare it with that of rhinoplasty candidates in general, before it’s determined whether you’re a good candidate for the procedure.

Plastic surgeon Dr. Reedy can help you achieve your goals. He specializes in procedures relating to cosmetic surgery, including procedures such as facelift, breast implants, breast lift, breast reduction, liposuction and tummy tuck. Surgeons in Reading - Face Lift for Men

Some of the most visible signs of aging first appear on the face. Although the changes appear gradually, there may come a day when you look in the mirror and decide that the face you see doesn’t reflect the way you feel about yourself. If you’d like to look as good as you feel, a facelift can help.

Also known as rhytidectomy, a facelift smooths the loose skin on your face and neck, tightens underlying tissues and removes excess fat. As a result, your face will appear firmer and fresher.

You may be a good candidate for a facelift if you have any of the following types of conditions:

  • a deep line that runs from the corner of your nose to the corner of your mouth
  • loss of a well-defined jawline
  • deep wrinkles in the cheeks and sagging skin near the cheekbones
  • loose skin, wrinkles or excess fatty tissue in the neck

Hair Removal for Men

Now men and women alike are making unwanted facial and body hair a thing of thee past - thanks to the Cutera CoolGlide Laser. No more painful waxing, electrolysis or razors! The CoolGlide laser delivers 21st century technology for treatment of this distressing problem. Cleared for permanent hair reduction, the CoolGlide laser can treat men and women of all skin types and tones safely and effectively. Even patients with a suntan.

The Cutera CoolGlide Difference:

The Cutera CoolGlide is the best laser hair removal system on the market for all skin types and tones, from light to dark, including tanned patients. Its unique design, longer wavelength, and innovative cooling design, allow extremely effective, safe and permanent results.

What areas can be treated with the CoolGlide?

The CoolGlide can remove hair from all parts of the body including the face, legs, arms, underarms, and back. It can also treat sensitive areas like the chest, nipples, and bikini line.

What do CoolGlide treatments feel like?

As the name implies, the CoolGlide handpiece cools and soothes as it glides along your skin. When the pulse of light is delivered, some patients experience a mild pinching or stinging sensation. No local anesthesia or pain medication is typically required; however, some patients may prefer to use a topical anesthetic when sensitive areas are treated.

How many treatments will I need?

Most areas require 3-6 treatments. However the number of CoolGlide treatments required for optimal long-term benefits depends on multiple factors - hair thickness, the area treated and your hair’s growth cycle. Interestingly, not all hairs are actively growing at the same time and actually go through three distinct phases: growth, regression, and resting. CoolGlide treatments work by disabling the hair that is principally in the active growth phase at the time of treatment. Since other hairs will enter this active growth phase at different times, additional treatments may be necessary to disable all of the hair follicles in a given area.

What happens after the treatment?

Immediately following your CoolGlide treatment, the area may appear a bit red and swollen. Three to seven days after treatment you may experience what seems to be regrowth of hair. Actually, most of these hairs are being shed as a result of your treatment and are not regrowing. Between treatments you should not wax or pluck your hair, but it is permissible to shave.

Are there any restrictions on my activity after treatment?

Following the treatment, you can return to your normal activities right away, but some redness may occur. The use of sunscreen is recommended on any treated areas exposed to the sun. In addition, your physician may recommend that you use a specially formulated skin care product line or prescribe a skin care regimen especially formulated for your skin type.

What are the possible side effects?

Although patients experience few side effects, the most commonly noticed are slight reddening and local swelling of the skin, similar to sunburn. These effects typically last for several hours or less. In rare instances, blistering may occur. Consult with your medical professional for complete information on the benefits and risks of treatment.

How does the CoolGlide compare with other hair removal methods?

Shaving, waxing and depilatory creams are all temporary methods which must be repeated on a frequent basis. The CoolGlide offers permanent hair reduction for lasting results.

How does the CoolGlide compare with electrolysis?

Electrolysis is a tedious, invasive, and painful process that involves inserting a needle into each individual hair follicle and delivering an electrical charge to them one at a time. Electrolysis often requires years of treatments at regular intervals. By delivering light energy to hundreds of hair follicles at a time, the CoolGlide effectively treats an area in just seconds that would take over an hour with electrolysis.

Why choose CoolGlide over other laser hair removal systems?

Using the latest technology in laster hair removal, the CoolGlide can rapidly treat large areas without the limitations of older technologies. The CoolGlide longer wavelength allows it to be used safely and effectively on patients with light or dark skin as well as tanned skin. Unlike other systems, the CoolGlide can treat the fine hair on a womans upper lip just as easily and effectively as the coarse hair on a man’s back. The cooled handpiece increases patient comfort and minimizes the adverse skin reaction commonly seen with other lasers.

Perlane® Injection for Men

The newest member of the Restylane Family: Perlane

What is Perlane?

Both are cosmetic dermal fillers that replace lost volume and restore youthful contours to the skin to smooth away moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds)

How do I choose between Restylane and Perlane?

You don’t have to. In clinical trials, Restylane and Perlane were used in the same patients. The hyaluronic acid in both products is made by the same biotechnical process. The difference is in the gel particle size. Perlane gel particles are larger and designed for deeper injection than Restylane. Your doctor will decide which product is right for you.

How does my doctor know when to use Restylane or Perlane?

Your doctor will decide which product is right for you based on an evaluation of facial wrinkles and folds.

How long do Perlane last?

Perlane lasts at least six months, in a majority of patients. The products’ patented stabilization technology helps maintain the cosmetic effect for those time periods.

Is Perlane FDA approved?

Yes. It is approved by the FDA for the treatment of moderate to sever facial wrinkles and folds, like the ones from your nost to the corner os your mouth. Ask your physician whether treatment is right for you.

What should patients do prior to treatment?

Perlane requires no pretesting, but you should take a few precautions before being treated. Avoid using aspirin, non-steroidal anit-inflammatory medications, St. John’s Wort, or high doeses of Vitamin E supplements prior to treatment, because these may increase bruising or bleeding at the injection site. Also, if you have previously suffered from facial cold sores, discuss this with your doctor, who may prescribe a medication to minimize recurrence.

Does Perlane require an allery test?

No. Perlane does not require an allergy test and can be administered immediately-no waiting is required.

How is Perlane administered?

Perlane is administered by injection to the treatment site. Before treatment talk to your doctor about pain management.

Is any of the material left in the skin after it has dissolved?

No. Over time Perlane products are broken down and eliminated by the body-unlike permanent fillers.

Does the injections hurt?

Restylane products are injected directly into the skin in small amounts by an ultrafine needle. As with all injections, some patients may experience discomfort. To increase your comfort, your doctor will assess your need for pain management and determine what technique is right for you.

How much do treatments costs?

A Perlane procedure is customized to your specific needs, so the cost will vary. In general, the cost is comparable to the cost of similar procedures. Ask your doctor to give a cost estimate based on your particular needs.

How long should I schedule an appointment?

How long the aesthetic correction lasts is very individual. Talk to your doctor about the benefits of scheduling a follow-up appointment in about six months.

What are Restylane and Perlane products made of?

Restylane was the first cosmetic dermal filler made from hyaluronic acid that has been odified slightly to last longer than the body’s hyaluronic acid. In the human body natural hyaluronic acid provides voume and fullness to the skin.
